Ethereum
The programmable blockchain powering decentralized finance.
What is Ethereum?
Ethereum is the world's leading programmable blockchain, enabling developers to build decentralized applications (dApps) using smart contracts — self-executing code that runs exactly as programmed without any possibility of downtime, censorship, or third-party interference. It is the foundation of DeFi, NFTs, DAOs, and the broader Web3 ecosystem.

The Story of Ethereum
Proposed by Vitalik Buterin in 2013 and launched in July 2015, Ethereum introduced the concept of a 'world computer' — a blockchain that could run arbitrary programs, not just transfer value. The 2016 DAO hack and subsequent hard fork tested the community's governance. The 2017 ICO boom brought explosive growth and congestion.
Ethereum's most significant transformation came with 'The Merge' in September 2022 — a transition from energy-intensive Proof of Work to Proof of Stake, reducing energy consumption by ~99.95%. The EIP-1559 upgrade introduced ETH burning, making the supply deflationary during periods of high network activity.
How Ethereum Works
Ethereum's Ethereum Virtual Machine (EVM) is a Turing-complete runtime environment that executes smart contracts. Solidity, Ethereum's primary programming language, allows developers to encode complex financial logic, governance rules, and application state directly on-chain.
Ethereum's roadmap — including sharding and Layer 2 scaling solutions like Optimism, Arbitrum, and zkSync — aims to scale the network to millions of transactions per second while maintaining decentralization. Layer 2 networks already process more transactions than Ethereum's base layer.
What Ethereum Is Used For
Decentralized Finance (DeFi)
Lending, borrowing, trading, and yield farming without banks — $50B+ locked in Ethereum DeFi protocols.
NFTs & Digital Ownership
Ethereum is the primary blockchain for non-fungible tokens representing art, collectibles, and gaming assets.
Smart Contract Platform
The most widely used platform for deploying decentralized applications across every industry.
DAOs & Governance
Decentralized autonomous organizations use Ethereum to coordinate global communities without central leadership.
